The Feast of Hanukkah will begin on Tuesday evening,
December 20th which is the 25th of the Hebrew
month of Kislev in the year 5772.
Hanukkah is also known as ‘Chag Ha Orim’ or the
Festival of Lights. It commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish
people from Antiochus IV and his Syrian army. It is also called the
‘Season of Our Deliverance.’ There is a saying that we like to say
in Judaism that goes along with this feast, as well as with Passover
and Purim that goes like this: “They tried to kill us we won, let’s
eat!”
The eight day celebration of Hanukkah includes the lighting of the Hanukiah,
joyful music & dancing and special Hanukkah songs, special food
cooked in ‘oil’ (latkes) and the ‘Dreydel’ game (which in Yiddish
means ‘to turn’). This is all to celebrate the miracle
that God performed for His people.
The Hanukkah story begins with the rise to power of
Alexander the Great several centuries before Yeshua was born. At
that time, the world was unified into one common government and
culture called “Hellenism”. After Alexander died at an early age,
his kingdom was divided into four different provinces. The
Israelites lived in the province of Syria under the leadership of a
“mad tyrant” named Antiochus Epiphanies.
